Itinerary
Your holiday begins today as you arrive in Edinburgh independently and check in to our hotel where you are greeted by our Tour Manager. Afterwards, you're at leisure to start exploring Scotland's capital.
The heart of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with the Old Town's Royal Mile and the New Town's award-winning Georgian architecture continuing the contrast between traditional and contemporary. As you admire the grand neoclassical buildings of the New Town or stroll up Calton Hill to view the National Monument of Scotland, modelled on the Greek Parthenon, it's easy to see why Edinburgh came to be regarded as the 'Athens of the North'. There are so many great sights to see in Edinburgh, from renowned museums to picturesque streets and the historic delights of the Royal Mile. Outside the National Museum of Scotland, you can find a small fountain commemorating Greyfriars Bobby, the terrier who guarded the grave of his owner for 14 years.
This evening, we gather at our central hotel for our first dinner together as a group.

I saw more than I thought was possible! I enjoyed the variety of traveling by coach, train, water ferries and a boat. Every hotel was lovely and quite accommodating to our group of 24 plus our lovely guide.

This was a wonderful rail tour. The accommodations were great, the trains were as described and the scenery was truly remarkable. The tour manager was exceptional in every way--she skillfully managed a diverse group of adults on holiday with great charm and expert commentary/advice.

It’s a tour of Scotland. How can you not love that? If you haven’t been to Scotland, just go. It’s ruggedly beautiful, clean and safe, friendly, and has so much to offer in art, history, archaeology, culture, etc. There’s something for everyone to enjoy. This tour is well paced and goes to interesting places. Traveling by train made it even better because the views while traveling weren’t marred by highways. We stayed in great hotels and consistently had nice rooms and wonderful meals. I can travel well without spending a lot of money. I could not have done this trip on my own for less than it cost through Vacations by Rail. It was a great value for the money. I should add that I was a single traveler, and I didn’t feel that my accommodations were any lesser than those of the couples who were on the same tour. Sometimes single travelers get stuck in tiny rooms in some forgotten part of the hotel. This definitely wasn’t the case on this tour. Our tour manager, Tracey Richards, was everything you’d want a tour manager to be and more. She was helpful, resourceful, and unendingly positive. She knew interesting bits about all the places we went and could give good suggestions for things to do in our free time. Thanks for a wonderful tour, Tracey! Finally, and I don’t know if this has something to do with the kind of person who takes on the adventure of traveling by train, what a lovely group of people I lucked into on the tour! We ranged in age from early 20s to 80s. Every person was up for adventure and easy to spend time with. Couldn’t have met a nicer bunch. I can’t guarantee that your fellow travelers will be as wonderful, but I think that undertaking a journey by rail might attract that sort. In short, I had a marvelous trip and would highly recommend this tour.

Spectacular scenery. Great visits to castles and lochs. Excellent hotels, particularly in Glen Coe and Edinburgh. Good food. Super Tour Manager. Slight frustration was the coach driver who talked incessantly. Photos: Martin Sinnock
